What is the blind spot?

At the point where the optic nerve enters the eye, there is no retina, and consequently, this area is not light-sensitive. This point, which is just below the center of the back of the eye, is called the blind spot. 
You can prove the existence of this blind spot in the following manner. Mark a cross and the dot on a paper like the following picture.
Note the cross and the dot on the image. Close your left eye, and hold this page before your open right eye. Fix your gaze on the cross. Now move the book towards you and then away from you, until you find the point where the dot completely disappears. At this point the dot is focused by the lens of the eye exactly your blind spot. Hence, you can't see the dot.
