In the birds world, just as the rest of the animal kingdom, it is very important for the adults of the species to find mates, to breed and to produce youngs. If this did not happen, the entire species would die out. The bright and attractive colouring of a male bird is intended to attract a female bird. The male will spend a lot time preening his feathers to make sure that he is looking his best when the time for courtship comes near.
One bird in particular has a really spectacular plumage, which it uses in its courtship displays. This bird is the peacock. Its partner the peahen looks drab indeed alongside her handsome mate! In some species of birds like robins, for instance, both the male and females are exactly alike in their plumage, and in these species, other methords of choosing a mate have evolved.
