Read and Understand them and Improve your Knowledge...India’s first experimental satellite, built by the Indian Space Research Organization and completely designed and fabricated in India but launched from the Soviet Union on April 19, 1975, was named after the ancient Indian scientist, Aryabhata, in commemoration of his valuable contributions to astronomy and mathematics.
Born in 476 BC in Kerala, Aryabhata was educated at the university of Nalanda, then a great centre of learning. Around 499 BC, he wrote Aryabhatiya, a treatise in verse couplets on mathematics and astronomy that was recognised as a masterpiece. The book is divided into three sections that deal with algebra, time calculations, and geometry. Among the various topics dealt with are quadratic equations, mathematical series, compound interest, ratios, linear equations, square and cube roots, mensuration, and plane trigonometry. In this book, Aryabhata gives an approximation for pi (3.1416), which is correct to four decimal places and the most accurate among those of the ancients.
Aryabhata also made many pioneering observations in astronomy. He was the first to deduce that the earth is round and that it rotates on its own axis, creating day and night. He also correctly attributed the luminosity of the moon and planets to reflected sunlight, and noted that solar and lunar eclipses occurred because of the shadows cast by the earth and the moon. Another of his works was the Aryabhatasidhanta, a textbook for day-to-day astronomical calculations and a guide to determine auspicious times for various rituals. Even today, his astronomical data are used in preparing panchangs, or Hindu almanacs
