In order to live in this world, we have to know what is happening in it. We are made aware of the world around us means of our senses.
For many centuries, man believed that human beings had only five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Modern scientists have added to the list the senses of pressure, heat, cold and pain. There are several steps in the process of sensing.
A stimulus act on the nerves in one of the sense organs. Nerve impulses from the sense organ travel to the brain. In the brain, the impulses are interpreted as a feeling or sensation. For instance, if you stick your finger with a needle, nerve endings in the skin of your finger are stimulated to send impulses to your brain, which interprets the impulses as pain.
It is important to note that, although the brain interprets the impulses as pain, the pain is not felt in the brain, but rather in the finger; that is the sense organ.
