This is another idea that is still being discussed. Many paleontologists believe that dinosaurs really are the ancestors of modern birds. Certain dinosaurs like for example the small two-legged meat eater Velociraptor, have many birds like feathers. These include neck bones that are curved or shaped like a letter 'S' air sacs in the backbones, and a semi-lunate (crescent shaped like a half moon) carpal bone that allows the arm to be folded up like a birds wing.

Velociraptor belongs to a family of dinosaurs called the dromaeosaurs. Dromaeosaurs had some features that made them different from other dinosaurs. They had bony rods in their tails that kept them stiff for most of the length of their tail. They also had very large toe claws that were good for ripping up, and holding onto their prey.

Recently, a tiny dromaesaur called Microraptor was discovered in the Liaoning province of China.

The skeleton of the Microraptor was found with the impressions of feathers around its arms and legs, strengthening the idea that Dromaeosaurs are close to the ancestors of birds.
