The heart is one organ that never seems to rest. Whether you are awake or asleep, it goes on and on. In that sense we could say that the heart never rests. But it is not exactly true, since the heart does rest a great deal!

What the heart does, ultimately, is to go on contracting and relaxing, throughout its lifetime. It pumps blood as it contracts, and it gets filled as it expands. Some experts consider that the ‘relaxation’ part is actually a period of rest for the heart. This is the time for the heart to fill.

Some scientists say that the heart rests for a fraction of a second between beats. According to one estimate, in a lifetime of 70 years, the heart rest about 40 years. It rests even when it working its hardest.
