All the feathers on a bird's body put together comprise its 'plumage'. A tiny ruby-throated hummingbird has about 1000 feathers. A white-throated sparrow has about 2000 feathers. It's amazing that for most flying birds, their feathers weight more than their bones! The bones of a peigeon, for example, weigh less than its feathers! The peacock, our national bird, is famous for its spectacular tail faeathers with their iridescent or glowing colours.
