Barcodes are an indispensable part of modern consumer products. They appear as width s and spacings of printed parallel lines, or patterns of dots, concentric circles, and text codes hidden within images. Barcodes serve as identification tags. They help keep track of an item, and quickly retrieve information about it. Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers or scanned from an image by special software. When the laser beam is reflected from a barcode, the reader detects a pattern of reflection from the dark and light area.
This produces a corresponding electrical signal. This signal is translated to digital code by reader's microprocessor. The microprocessor looks up the digital code in a database to identify the products, and the data associated with it. The first barcode was developed by in 1948 by Bernard Silver and Norman Joseph Woodland of the United States. However, barcodes were put to commercial use only in 1966, and they were not commercially successful until the 1980's.
