Leonhart Fuchs (1501 - 1566) was a sixteenthcentury German physician who is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Botany. Born in Bavaria in 1501, Fuchs studied medicine and qualified as a doctor in 1524. After practising in Munich for two years, he became a professor of medicine at Ingolstadt. In 1535, he was appointed a professor at Tubingen – a post he held for the rest of his life. He soon gained fame as a writer and practitioner of medicine. Fuchs was deeply interested in medicinal plants, and studied them extensively. Perceiving the importance of practical experience, he offered botanical field days for the students, where he demonstrated medicinal plants. He founded one of the first German botanical gardens. He wrote more than 50 books. His most famous work was De historia stirpium commentarii insignes (‘Notable commentaries on the history of plants’), published in 1542, in which he described about 500 wild and domesticated plant species and their medical uses. His books on the anatomy of the eye and its diseases were among the standard references on this subject during this period. The plant fuchsia was named after him
