In contrast to powerful running birds, there is one group of flightless birds that can at best only waddle on land. These are penguins. What these birds lack is walking ability, they certainly make up for in swimming skill. Their flipper-like wings are useless for laying, but are ideal for propelling their streamlined body, with speed and efficiency through water. Penguins are also excellent divers. They can dive to depths of 1000 meters and can remain under water for upto 20 minutes. Penguins waddle on land, because their feet are set far back on their bodies. This is just the right position for a rubber, however, and this is how the penguins steers under water. Penguins are so agile in the sea they can be described as flying underwater.
