All birds shed their feathers and grow a new set at least once in a year. Some birds go through this process twice a year. During the moulting period, some species of birds are unable to defend themselves. So, they find safe hiding places and live quietly until their new suit of feathers has grown back! If moulting did not take place, a bird's feathers would soon get worn and shabby from constatnt use , and the bird would be unable to fly. During moulting, a new feather grows out of the skin, inside covering that look like a straw. When the feathers is fully grown, the cover peels away. Some birds replace their feathers a few at a time.
