The Colosseum of Ancient Rome is one of the landmarks of world history, for it is a testimonial to the greatness of the Roman Empire.

This giant amphitheater was built in the center of Rome. The construction was started by the Emperor Vespasian in AD 72, and completed in AD 80 by his successor and heir, the Emperor Titus.

The Colosseum was huge. It could seat 50,000 people. It covered around 2.4 hectares of land. It took more than 1.1 million tones of marbles, stone, and bricks to complete the massive structure. The Roman emperors staged gladiator fights and other forms of entertainment for the Roman people in the Colosseum, including mock sea battles.

After four centuries of active use, the magnificent arena fell into neglect. Though two-thirds of the orginal Colosseum has been destroyed over time, the amphitheater remains a popular tourist destination, as well as an iconic symbol of Rome.
